A common misconception among many statisticians is that the mean and the standard deviation are exactly the same. But this is not true. The mean is the arithmetic mean while the standard deviation is the average of the standard deviations. We are more familiar with the mean than the standard deviation.

The mean is the arithmetic mean, or average of the numbers from 1 to n. The standard deviation is the average of the standard deviations, or the range from 1 to n.

we are more familiar with the mean than we are with the standard deviation, so it makes sense that the mean describes the average, while the standard deviation describes the range.

It’s the same in pretty much all graphs we have ever seen. If we’re familiar with averages or average numbers, then we are more familiar with the standard deviation. If we are familiar with standard deviations or ranges, then we are more familiar with the mean.

I was born and raised in a tiny town in Georgia, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been out. The reason for this is simple. Because I grew up in a small town, I was only the first child. I was sent to school for a school year at a time, and my entire life was spent in the city. I had no idea that any child I knew was in such a state as I was. I was a young girl in a small town.

So if you are born to small town living and raised by a couple of townies, you really do not have a clue what a real standard deviation is. It is just a number that tells us how many standard deviations we are from the mean. What we mean by a “mean” is that we should be. If you were raised in a suburb, you would have a much higher average than the average person in a large city.

this is also a common distortion, but it’s not so much that we’re missing out or are just being overly dramatic. In actual fact, we’re just not taking the basic principles and mathematics of the subject into consideration when we describe the average. If we did, we would already know this. And if we don’t, then it isn’t a good sign for our future.
