She was having an affair with another guy before he dumped her, and the two of them hooked up. Terry was the one who got to dump Julie, not Julie.
Also, since Julie and Terry had been dating for a while, they should have known each other better, I think. They should have been more alert to each other’s moods and relationships.

Also, the fact that he was mad at her for being dumped because Terry dumped her says a lot. Also, the fact that he would dump her for someone else is a hint that he doesn’t like Julie that much.
