Just because we have a fancy font doesn’t mean it has to look fancy, or even that’s the type of thing we really want it to be. For instance, I love the look of bold sans serif fonts, but they aren’t always the most useful. I’m not saying that a solid sans serif font should be the way it always has to be.
Sure it can be. But if you have the time to learn to use a sans serif font correctly, why not use it? In this case, it’s the default typeface used for the main menu, the site’s logo, and the title bar.
